Working Girl

After being a stay-at-home mom for 12 years, I have rejoined the working world for one night a week. I really enjoy it so far. Here’s what projects I had time for this week. The above is a Pink Pearl Cap from Expression Fiber Arts Crochet along on Ravelry. I made a green one for the actual CAL (remember fancy wife?) but I decided to whip another one up. Once you get the hang of it the pattern is really easy and I love the result with the added button. This particular hat will be listed on Etsy and I’ll be making an identical one to be donated to our local women’s domestic violence shelter. I’ve also thought about doing a child version for a matching mother/daughter set for the shelter. Thoughts or opinions on that?

I also did a couple simple beanies to donate to the local hospital through the Caring Parents Program which gives purple hats to newborns along with information on shaken baby syndrome to their parents. The pictures didn’t turn out well but here they are.

There are no coincidence’s

I’m not one to believe in coincidences. In my mind, everything happens for a reason, even if I don’t know or understand the reason right away. Here’s my story behind this statement which also is the story behind this purple newborn beanie.

A couple weeks ago Ternie & I decided it was time for me to return to work on a part-time basis. I applied somewhere and found out this past week I was offered the position. Meanwhile, I’ve been learning more about all the things Ravelry can do. I’ve learned how to customize my searches and how handy dandy the groups tab is. I also happened to see a little box that says you can search groups by location. I immediately was curious if there were groups in my area. There were but they were mostly older groups with no activity for years. After scrolling for awhile I found one just created in September. Perfect! I read the description to make sure I was interested and it was appropriate. I didn’t look at a name or anything in particular. The group makes purple hats that are then distributed to our local hospital where parents are given the purple hats along with education on Period of Purple Crying (Shaken Baby Syndrome/Abusive Head Trauma Prevention). I remembered when Turtle was born at this hospital we were given a DVD on purple crying so I joined the group and posted a question about how the hats were to be donated. I never heard back but nevertheless I started on a hat with some Red Heart Sport purple yarn I had. While I was working on the crown I got to thinking there may be certain requirements I didn’t think to check earlier so I went back to the group page and I couldn’t believe it. The group was started by the very company I’m now employed by! I made a point to remember to ask the manager that hired me. Turns out this is one of the services we offer to the community and our office is apparently 25 women who make hats during staff meetings. They just decided to start a group in case others like myself weren’t aware and wanted to participate. Even before this I thought I would like this job but that made me feel like I would fit right in. Again, I say, I don’t believe in coincidences and everything happens for a reason and a purpose.

Has anything like this happened to you?

I need a new license plate

Ternie and I have an ongoing joke. Many years ago on I-65 in Birmingham, Alabama, we saw a man driving his wife’s vehicle (she was with him). As they sped past us we noticed her license plate: FANCY WIFE. After my latest project, Ternie can claim the same for me. I made this hat for the Expression Fiber Arts Crochet along (CAL). EFA yarn is definitely a luxury I can’t afford however it is fun to see what wild colorways Chandi comes up with and I’ve saved several of her free patterns but this was the first I’ve made. Actually this was my first completed CAL as well. The pattern is called Pink Pearl Cap. I used Caron Simply Soft in colorway Pagoda and added a simple yet fancy black button. The pattern itself was easy in theory but once I got working on it, I had a little trouble getting the hang of it. I eventually got it and am very pleased with how it turned out. I will be making more and it will be added to Etsy soon.

Infinity scarf & beanie hat set

I’ve been way behind on most everything lately but I did manage to get this simple beanie made and infinity scarf set made. I made the scarf up. If anyone would like a pattern I’ve toyed with the idea of writing a pattern but, to be honest, with the exception of starting using foundation single crochet, all it is is double crochet. Nevertheless, if anyone prefers having it written I will be happy to do that.
It is now available in my Etsy shop.
